About

Hello! My name is Kaitlin and I am the face behind Encore Dogs! I am a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and a registered Animal Training Instructor (ATI) with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council (ABTC). I am also a tutor for Puppy School UK and a volunteer trainer with DogAID.

Having grown up with a reactive dog, I know firsthand how challenging it can be just to leave the house and how crucial early, preventative training really is.

I began my training journey as a Puppy School UK tutor, helping dog parents catch problem behaviours early and build a strong foundation for success.

Alongside running group classes and 1:1 training for pet dogs, I now also focus on training assistance dogs. This means the techniques I use are not only force-free and effective, they’re proven to meet the high standards required to pass an assistance dog test. If they work for those dogs, they’ll work for yours too!

We really enjoyed Kaitlin’s Adolescent Academy classes. The whole family took part and we found her training exercises, hints and tips really useful. It was fun and informative. The dog also seemed to enjoy it! Kaitlin has a way with the dogs that is impressive and gets the best out of them. She’s also very good with owners! I just wish we had her natural ability. I recommend her classes. They are informative but relaxed and fun.

Kaitlin of Encore Dogs is the sort of trainer that prepares you for the real world. And she'll give you her all to do that, setting up mock cafes with cups and plates, and she builds exercises up so you and your dog can succeed. She also doesn't shy away from a tricky dog, my dog is very high energy and can be quite full on but Kaitlin takes that and harnesses it to get the best out of her. Not only that but I've learnt some really useful skills that can be applied, to specific concerns, so don't feel like a group class will be a waste of time - these classes aren't like your regular class where you spend half your time sitting around.

We attended adolescent dog training with Kaitlin which was brilliant to help us and our adopted pup settle more, knowing we were doing right by him. After some ongoing reactivity on walks we got back in touch for some 1:1 training. Kaitlin is such a good trainer, relentlessly positive and never judgemental. We really appreciate the follow up messages and know she has the dog's best interests at heart. Thank you!

We’ve had such a brilliant experience with Kaitlin at Encore Dogs. Her 1:1 training was so carefully considered and curated to our needs and always put our dog's welfare first — even adjusting sessions when the weather wasn’t safe. We also attended the Adolescent Academy classes which gave us essential tools we now use every day. With young children in the family, Kaitlin’s guidance on gentle greetings was invaluable. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, recommended helpful tools, and answered every question with care. We trusted her completely and will definitely be staying in touch!

  • Not sure if your dog is ready to be off-lead? 🐕

They are if they have automatic check-ins!

This means they are frequently turning around and looking to you even when trotting ahead.

To teach an auto check-in you need:
1. A long line
2. A release cue your dog knows well
 3. Strong name association

🐾 I like to start by using the dog’s name to get their attention.

🐾 Mark with a clicker or a voice marker when they turn to hear their name, then reward close to you.

🐾 Use your release cue once you’ve rewarded to tell them it’s ok to go back to what they were doing.

🐾 Continue this at various distances while using the long line.

🐾 Then, start to mark and reward your dog just looking back to you (they’ll do this because they are expecting you to call their name like you practised!).

Maclaren, the lovely dog in this video, started learning the auto check-in during our ’Train for You’ walks.

This is after about a month of consistent walks!

  • Welcome to @puppyschooluk Barnes!

We had a lovely first class covering a lot of ground including:

🐾Safe ‘trade offs’ for high-value items
🐾How to motivate puppy
🐾Settle foundations
🐾Creating a predictable routine

And Nya had a lovely nap at the end! 💤
Proof that stimulating the brain is just as tiring as a long walk 😂

Summer session starts August 5th, link in the bio 👆

  • Does your puppy keep stopping on walks? 🛑

Let them!

They’ve only been in this world a short time, and it can be a lot!
Puppies need time to stop and observe. 👀

My tips are:
🐾 Wait calmly with a loose lead
🐾 When they do decide to move, reward them with an encouraging, positive voice and sometimes food (the food comes AFTER they decide to move!)
🐾 If you need to get somewhere quickly, don’t take the puppy! Or have them in a stroller, carrier or sling that they are comfortable in.
🐾 Enjoy the quiet, slow walks while they last! Use it as a moment to let yourself breathe and take in the environment too.

  • I don’t let puppies greet other dogs on lead…👀
UNLESS these 3 things are happening:🐾they approach calmly🐾The other dog is comfortable interacting🐾The greeting only lasts a few secondsIf greeting look like:❌puppy barks and/or pulls towards the other dog when they see them❌ jumping in the other dog’s face❌a wrestling match with maypole leads

Then you need to rethink on-lead greetings!

Puppies get excited and it’s ok!

Some tips to help:
⭐️Work at a distance first
⭐️Only greet when calm and have a loose lead
⭐️Teach puppy to move on quickly
⭐️Don’t say hi to every dog you see!

Happy training!

  • Training can be tedious, exhausting, stressful...
Take a moment today to just let go and have fun with your dog in whatever way they love best.

Maybe it's in the form of playing with video props like Benny 😆

I'd love to hear about your dog's silliest moments! 👇
