1:1 Training

Being a dog parent in the city is no walk in the park!

Think busy roads, packed parks, and plenty of stressed-out pups. If your dog’s recall is non-existent, they’re dragging you down the road after a cat, or you become invisible the moment another dog appears, you are not alone!

I’ve been through all of it (and more) and I promise, things can get better.

Many dog parents assume their young pups will simply grow out of unwanted behaviours but the truth is, practise makes perfect and right now, they’re getting really good at the things you don’t want them to do! Waiting until these behaviours become overwhelming (at any age) only makes change harder, often leading to costly behaviour programs or, in the worst cases, rehoming.

Don’t worry, you can have a calm, confident dog who rushes back to you in the park, walks safely by your side and is actually fun to be with. All it takes is the right support and guidance. As a qualified trainer who’s worked with hundreds of dogs, I can help you rediscover the joy of life with your pup!

My force-free, positive approach looks at the bigger picture: you, your dog, and the environment. I show you how to weave training into your daily routine so it feels natural, not like another chore.

Is your dog like Hope the Husky?

Her poor owners would spend hours (I mean it, hours!) trying to get her back on lead after a walk.
They signed on to my London Dog program and here is what they have to say now:

“I did not expect our dog to improve so well and so quickly. Kaitlin is very helpful, gentle and has all the tricks and advice one might need. Hope loved her and is now a more confident and happy dog. Kaitlin’s positive reinforcement is exactly what we were looking for. If she can teach recall to a husky, she can literally do anything! I could not recommend her enough! We will be forever grateful!”

How About Quinny?

She struggles to trust people and would bark and lunge at almost anything when out on a walk.

“Kaitlin is amazing. She had our nervous dog literally eating out of her hands within moments of meeting her. We started out with a 1:1 consultation wherein Kaitlin assessed my dog’s needs. Training walks were recommended to get my dog to where she needs to be. Even after the first walk I could see a noticeable difference in the way she responded to her environment. Kaitlin is knowledgeable, patient, professional and I highly recommend her and Encore Dogs!”

  • Not sure if your dog is ready to be off-lead? 🐕

They are if they have automatic check-ins!

This means they are frequently turning around and looking to you even when trotting ahead.

To teach an auto check-in you need:
1. A long line
2. A release cue your dog knows well
 3. Strong name association

🐾 I like to start by using the dog’s name to get their attention.

🐾 Mark with a clicker or a voice marker when they turn to hear their name, then reward close to you.

🐾 Use your release cue once you’ve rewarded to tell them it’s ok to go back to what they were doing.

🐾 Continue this at various distances while using the long line.

🐾 Then, start to mark and reward your dog just looking back to you (they’ll do this because they are expecting you to call their name like you practised!).

Maclaren, the lovely dog in this video, started learning the auto check-in during our ’Train for You’ walks.

This is after about a month of consistent walks!

  • Does your puppy keep stopping on walks? 🛑

Let them!

They’ve only been in this world a short time, and it can be a lot!
Puppies need time to stop and observe. 👀

My tips are:
🐾 Wait calmly with a loose lead
🐾 When they do decide to move, reward them with an encouraging, positive voice and sometimes food (the food comes AFTER they decide to move!)
🐾 If you need to get somewhere quickly, don’t take the puppy! Or have them in a stroller, carrier or sling that they are comfortable in.
🐾 Enjoy the quiet, slow walks while they last! Use it as a moment to let yourself breathe and take in the environment too.
